About
Hi, thanks for visiting. My name is Sam Krehnbrink, I’m a Software Engineer currently living in Alexandria, VA. I grew up near Annapolis, Maryland where I spent a lot of my time on the waters off the Chesapeake Bay as a kid. I had my first contact with a computer at the age of 10 when my uncle gave our family a Commodore 64. It was a pretty big deal for us kids considering our household wasnt big on TV or video games. Unfortunately I probably spent more time fighting with my two older sisters on whose turn it was to use the computer than I actually spent using it. As the days of the Commodore 64 faded, my reign as a teenager began. I ran track and cross country in high school and spent the rest of my time doing things typical rebellious teenager do. I found myself in an AP Computer Science class my senior year of high school and around the same time bought my first PC from my hard earned savings, which I accredit to my first job in the food services industry at a local fine dining establishment (cough, ahem Taco Bell cough). Due to my iNTp personality, I really enjoyed the problem solving and engineering aspects of the Computer Science class and decided it would make an interesting undergraduate major of study. I was accepted to the CS program at University of Maryland and enrolled in the fall of 1999. As with most people my college years flew by in a blink of an eye. I joined Phi Delta Theta Fraternity my sophomore year but spent many nights in the computer lab while my buddies were out partying. I also began a work study job during my sophomore year for a Mechanical Engineering Professor (Steve Buckley) where I remained employed until I graduated in the fall of 2003. During the majority of the time, I worked with graduate students writing software for real time data acquisition systems. Towards the end of my employment I spent time on a ONI funded project working on detonation modeling software using Java and Java 3D. At the time the core undergrad CS classes were taught mainly in C and C++ with a few upper level classes taught in Java. Little classroom experience made working with Java challenging but I enjoyed every minute of it. My experience with Java and brand spankin new CS degree landed me a job at SAIC working as a Java Developer on a defense related J2EE application. Six months after starting with SAIC I decided to enroll in Software Engineering MS program at George Mason University. After four years with SAIC, I was ready for new challenges and experiences and took a Java development position with SGIS, where I am currently employed. Between work and school I’ve developed a strong interest in web applications and find myself spending a lot of free time tinkering around with all things related to web design and development. I spend the rest of my free time with my amazing fiancee, Amy, who I met in the spring of 2005. Amy and I enjoy hanging around DC, spending time with friends and family, exploring new restaurants, and checking out various local events. I’m very much an outdoors person, enjoy fishing and boating, cooking, music, and try to stay active with sports and exercise. Well, that’s about it for now. I hope to keep this site updated with all things that interest me, web related and not, as well as new things going on in my life. Stop back in sometime and thanks again for checking out my site!
